President's Message

February 2012

Join us on Feb. 15 with Zach Wahl on “The Keys to Successful Information Governance.”

Winter in Washington lasts well into February.  Escape the weather at our “hot” programs.

Put on your calendar our dinner meeting on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, with Zach Wahl of Project Performance Corporation speaking on “The Keys to Successful Information Governance.”  Join your colleagues at the Marco Polo Restaurant in Vienna VA, with registration at 5:30 PM, dinner at 6:00 PM, and the program at 7:00 PM.  You can register via our ARMA NOVA website at http://www.armamar.org/nova .

Get ready for our big plans in March.  We start with the ARMA NOVA Spring 2012 Chapter Seminar on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, on “Autoclassification: Taking a Closer Look.”  This all-day education seminar is at the CSC Executive Briefing Center, 3170 Fairview Park Drive, Falls Church, VA.

Next, we co-sponsor on Thursday, March 16, 2012, “E-Discovery, Records & Information Management Conference & Expo” at the Ronald Reagan Building, The Pavilion Room, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC -- registration through DGI at http://www.digitalgovernment.com/Events.  Registration is free for the Government (includes contractors with a current government email and ID); private industry registration by March 2 is $295 (Save $100).

Finally, we finish the month with our dinner meeting on Wednesday, March 21, at the Marco Polo Restaurant, with our colleague Mike Miller, CRM, of Array Information Technology, Inc, speaking on “When is an Electronic Document an Electronic Record?”

We kicked off the 2012 New Year with our monthly dinner on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, with Bill English, CEO of Mindsharp, speaking on “Sharepoint Governance.”

We had two great meetings in December 2011.  We had a joint ARMA NOVA and NCC-AIIM afternoon event on Thursday, December 15, 2011, with Judge Facciola speaking on “The Convergence of e-Discovery, RM, and eFOIA.”  The Judge gave a well-received presentation to over 85 attendees.  Then, on Wednesday, December 21, we had our Holiday Dinner Meeting with our Training Futures Holiday Charity Fund Raising Event.  A representative of Training Futures and two graduates spoke about how important our contributions are for training students for entry level positions, including records management. We presented a check for $815.00 to Training Futures, representing your contributions, ARMA NOVA matches for your contributions over $25, and our ARMA NOVA contribution of $200.

On November 16, 2011, we held a dinner meeting with Jean Freeman of Freeman and Associates speaking on “Putting Information Management at the Governance Level.” She works with corporations to develop and implement governance requirements and helped us understand the difference between information management and information governance.

A number of your ARMA colleagues attended the ARMA International Conference at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center, National Harbor MD on October 17-19, 2011.  The conference was in the Washington DC area for the first time since the 1980’s.  We had an ARMA NOVA dinner on Tuesday, October 18, at the Cadillac Ranch All American Bar and Grill in National Harbor at the conclusion of the second day of the conference.

We began this fall with a successful dinner meeting on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at the Marco Polo Restaurant. Our speaker was Jason Baron of NARA on “Cutting Edge Issues in Information Governance: A Lawyer's Perspective.”

Please go to our ARMA NOVA Website at http://www.armamar.org/nova for more information or to become more involved in ARMA NOVA.

Our thanks to our Sponsors for this year -- Platinum Level: CSC and Iron Mountain, Gold Level: Zimmerman Associates and OpenText, Silver Level: Gimmal and NextPage!  Their financial support and assistance with our programs allow us to better serve our members.  If your organization would like to become a sponsor in 2011-2012 to raise its profile and further the work of the Chapter, please contact me or Charles Herbek.

Mark your calendar NOW with the dates for upcoming meetings in 2011-2012: Dinner meetings at the Marco Polo on February 15, March 21, April 18, and May 16; our March 6 co-sponsored DGI E-Discovery, Records & Information Management Conference & Expo, our all-day Education Seminar at CSC on March 15; and our Annual Social in June on a date to be determined.

Make the most of opportunities that the Chapter provides.  Come to meetings, get involved in our committees…consider serving as a Committee chair or as a member of the Board.  Committee work is a backbone of our Chapter’s success. Please let me know, if you are interested in joining a committee or if you have suggestions that can improve our Chapter.

I look forward to sharing some time with you this winter.
