Mid-Atlantic Region News OCTOBER 2006 - FROM THE TRIANGLE CHAPTER by Mike Keohane, CRM, President Triangle Chapter-North Carolina Greetings from the North Carolina Triangle Chapter! This chapter serves Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and all surrounding communities. December 6 2007 marks the 25th anniversary our chapter received its charter from ARMA.
Wow, 25 years. I’ve been in the RM business since the mid-1980’s. Looking back over these years, I’ve seen our profession evolve and re-invent ourselves countless times. Back in the 80’s, microfilm, fiche and COM were the most popular forms of archiving large volumes of records. Prep was tedious and retrieval was time consuming and, to say the least, frustrating at times. Today, microfilm still has a place in the RM realm but is slowly going the way of the dodo bird. Microforms are still a great economical way to store large volumes of records for extended periods of time, provided they are not accessed frequently. ECM is the latest process that works well and certainly does a lot to help us RM’s with retention and destruction.
Fall out from Enron, Arthur Andersen and other such entities has focused the spot light on the ethical/moral part of the RM profession. We’ve always advocated the proper handling of data throughout the entire life cycle. Recent regulations such as Gramm-Leach-Bliley, Sarbanes-Oxley and others have opened the door for us to work within our organizations to ensure proper RM procedures are followed. CEOs, CFOs and CIOs now understand the implications and penalties.
As for our Triangle Chapter, we’ve already had our initial meeting for the season. We have the chapter year off to a good start, with thanks going to the entire board and membership. The energy our board members bring to each meeting is truly inspirational. Our membership can always be counted on to step up and make things happen. Check out our website for future meetings, we would certainly welcome any visitors to our meetings. We are trying something a little different this year; some of our programs won’t be strictly records type subjects, but hopefully something that will appeal to the membership. A good example of this will be our March 1 2007 program that will bring in a spokesman from RDU airport to talk about recent security changes and overall changes since 9.11.
Our chapter membership is a rich mixture of all segments of the professional world. Our members range from the private and public sector, education and government, service and enduser. This eclectic mix offers all many opportunities to network and discuss all facets of records management and all those items that go into a full-fledged RM program. It’s more than just focusing records management but also helps each member with career and professional development.
We are already setting the foundation to assist with the ARMA Annual Conference and Expo slated for Baltimore in October 2007. Our region has an excellent opportunity to showcase our chapters and we are ready to pitch in where we can to help.
For those that have not had the opportunity to attend the annual conference, the 2007 Baltimore conference is a great opportunity. And I hope to meet others from our region in San Antonio in October – see you there!
