Mid-Atlantic Region News SEPTEMBER 2006 - RECIPE FOR SUCCESS by Linda Cleary, President Diamond State Chapter
Greetings from the Diamond State Chapter of ARMA International. Don’t know about you, but did your summer pass by in a flash? Vacations, grass mowing, the heat and high cost of air conditioning, etc. will soon be just a memory. Now that fall is fast approaching, not only are the schools back in session, it is now time for the DSC to switch gears and move full speed ahead with our 2006/2007 training programs.
I am very excited to report that 2005/2006 was a record year for our Chapter. Attendance at our monthly meetings was at an all time high. At one point we had standing room only and the momentum continued throughout the year. You may ask “what can you attribute this to?” Naturally I am going to give credit to our outstanding team of Officers and Directors, but I truly believe it was because we found a little niche that works for our Chapter. And what is this you may ask? Simple, we have breakfast meetings. Nothing like starting your day with a cup of java and a little ARMA. Seriously, it works for us. We meet at a hotel that is centrally located here in Wilmington. The meeting starts with a breakfast buffet at 8:00 AM, followed by introductions and announcements at 8:30 AM, and then we have our educational segment. The meetings end between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM and everyone heads back to work. While the training piece is always Records Management related, we have tried to bring in original topics of interest. For instance, we had a professional organizer talk about the importance of organization and how being organized not only helps us in our jobs, but in our every day life as well. We had a speaker from the Winterthur Museum located here in Wilmington come and talk to us about how the museum staff was helping to restore precious artifacts and documents that were damaged during hurricane Katrina. The topics were new and kept everyone’s interest, which as you all know, can be a bit challenging at times.
In addition to training, we also participated in community projects. During the month of November we collected small gifts to donate to the Boys and Girls Club for their Santa Secret Gift Shop. This allowed the children to purchase inexpensive gifts on their own that they could give to their loved ones on Christmas. In December we donated new toys to the Marines for their Toys for Tots campaign. Nothing like a handsome Marine in full dress uniform to boost attendance!
We are very fortunate here in the Diamond State to have a great group of members who not only have big hearts and a willingness to help, but also a zest for learning as well as contributing and I am proud to represent them. Our success is actually quite simple. Take a great team, add a little nourishment and throw in a topic of interest. Set your timer for first thing in the morning, and you have a recipe for success.
